All in a Day's Work...

I can’t believe it’s already Thursday! This week has flown by. I’ll give you a quick day-by-day so you can see what type of stuff I do on campus...

MONDAY
[morning]
--Wake up: 7:00am
--Mass
--Holy hour & rosary
--Team meeting to discuss the week
[afternoon]
--Prep. for Bible study
--Meet new students in the gym to work out together
[evening]
--We went to a local family’s house for dinner/welcome back party for their 11 yr. old son who was in the hospital with a ruptured appendix. This family is really supportive of FOCUS, and they are always finding ways to give to us and help us out.
--Held my first FOCUS Bible study with a great group of sophomore girls. They come from all different backgrounds and have really varied interests, but they really gel as a study and engage in insightful discussions about Christian life and our Faith.
--Prepared for our development meeting the next day.
--Bed time: 12:20am

TUESDAY
[morning]
--Wake up: 7:10 am (bad Kelly, don’t hit the sleep alarm!)
--Mass
--Holy hour & rosary
--Team development—My team meets once a week to discuss an excerpt or chapter of a spiritual book and part of the catechism. Making sure we are always learning more about the Faith better enables us to grow in our spiritual lives and share it with others.
[afternoon]
--My team always goes to the cafeteria on Tuesdays to meet new students, re-connect with students already involved in FOCUS, and help us to be more readily available and visible to interested students who may prefer to approach us in a non-threatening environment.
--Dave and I always have a personal meeting once a week to see how the week’s gone.
--I met a couple new students and worked in the library for a bit.
--Home to get some paper-work done.
[evening]
--Tuesday evenings my team always has a team dinner together at one of our apartments. It’s a time for us to hang out and connect outside of strictly “FOCUS work”
--Talked to Larry about his job interview (Pray for him!)
--Tried to prep. for discipleship a bit before falling asleep
--Bed time: 11:30pm

WEDNESDAY
[morning]
--Wake up: 7:45am
--Holy hour & rosary
[afternoon]
--Club Fest (10-3)—This is an event where all the clubs from the whole school come out onto the Green (a large grassy area in the middle of campus) and try and get people to join. We had a table and I talked to lots of people and got my hands thoroughly sticky from the melting freezie-pops we handed out. I had some great conversations with people about their Faith. Some were thrilled that there was a Catholic group on campus that runs Bible studies, gives rides to Mass, and provides great fellowship with other Christian students. I also had one young man engage in a dialog about suicide and the Catholic teaching on faith & works. Over-all, we had almost 50 new people sign up for more information or for Bible studies!
--Cleaned up the table and drove home
--Cooked an early dinner for Jessica and I (both of us had hardly eaten all day) and we ate and then took time for discipleship [the FOCUS term for leadership training combined with a purposeful accountability friendship—kinda like Christ did with His disciples or Paul did with Timothy & Titus, training others to be Christian leaders]
[evening]
--We always take students to evening Mass and adoration on Wednesdays.
--Hang out at Sonics for smoothies and conversation (part of the Wednesday night tradition)
--Bed time: 10:30pm (yay!)

THURSDAY
[morning]
--Wake up: 7:00am
--Mass
--Holy hour & rosary
--Team fundraising & donor ministry (until 2pm)
[afternoon]
--Paperwork
--Head to campus to meet with Cynthia about an event tomorrow
--Work out with students
[evening]
--Prep. for event tomorrow
--Hopefully get to bed by: 11:00pm

Perhaps that gives you a rough idea of the types of things I’m doing day to day. We have a general schedule, but one of our charisms is radical availability for others so we have to stay fairly flexible and we tend to be super busy!

Good stuff! It sounds like you've been able to connect with a lot of people. So often we are the only Christ people will ever meet...whether in the gym, the library, or at Sonics.

What a great look at the life of a modern-day missionary...Jesus met ppl at the well and the beach, St. Paul went to the altar of the unknown god, and Kelly has milkshakes at Sonics!
